From Lock Up To Liberty
How design turned a house of correction into a hotel of luxury

These experiences help us offer our clients the very best current products and services. My recent strategic communications course in Boston was exactly that kind of learning experience.
This excellent course reinforced what I’ve shared with my clients for years—the importance of knowing your audience, being authentic, and connecting with your audience.
The course was truly powerful, but the location of the conference was absolutely inspiring! Boston is an amazing part of our nation and an intoxicating city that overflows with our country’s history, diverse culture, and great food.
If you’re looking for creative inspiration, look no further than Boston’s Liberty Hotel. Built in 1851, this magnificent building is on the National Register of Historic Places and was once the Suffolk County Jail. The conversion from jail to luxury hotel is incredible. Great design allows this historic building to function as a luxury hotel and local hot spot while remaining true to the original design. The design plays homage to the building’s original purpose with floor names like Catwalk, a bar called the Alibi, and restaurant named CLINK. The décor of each room continues the jail theme with rugs depicting stop watches and jail door keys, safes used as side tables, pillows with tally marks to count off the days, and a ‘Do Not Disturb Sign’ that reads ‘SOLITARY’ with a cell-door key design. Every nook and cranny tastefully carried on the jail theme and provoked deeper thinking and creativity.
All this design stimulation made me wonder: Can we overdo design?
After my visit to The Liberty Hotel, I think not! The details matter. People notice. Dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s lets your customers and potential customers know that you take the time to get it right and that you’ll have the answers they need.
Getting the details right also tells your audience that you’ve thought of everything and you’ll do the same for them.
